VAST Composite Permeable Pavers Solve
Challenges for Patio and Parking Area at a
Public Radio Station in Alaska

Raven Radio Station in Alaska

Location:
Raven Radio
Sitka, AK

Contractor:
Southeast Cedar Homes
Sitka, AK

Project:
Parking Lot & Patio
5,600 Sq Ft

Solution:
VAST Composite
Permeable Pavers

Date:
2010

The Cable House is situated on the Sitka Sound waterfront and sits right next door to a fuel depot. Changes to local building codes required the station to add a proper parking area for its thirteen parking spaces.

"We had been parking cars on more or less unmaintained gravel with pot holes that filled with water and mud in the rainy season," said Ken Fate, general manager, Raven Radio. "The Cable House is next to the fuel depot, and the property slopes down to the ocean. We found out that stormwater management would be challenging."

In addition, a garage that was added in the late 1940s has been converted into an artist studio and gallery. As part of the renovation of the garage, a patio was planned for a 400 square-foot area under a new pavilion structure extending from its roof.

The aesthetics of the project were important to the radio station. The Cable House is historic and a prominent architectural landmark on the Sitka waterfront. As custodians of the property on behalf of the community, Raven Radio wanted the paving project to enhance its appearance. Strength to hold up under truck traffic, durability and maintenance were key considerations as well. The project required a material that can withstand repeated freeze-thaw cycles without cracking. The radio station also wanted a low-maintenance alternative.

For the driveway and parking area, two alternatives were considered: poured concrete and asphalt. Concrete pavers and clay brick are generally not considered for large paving projects in Alaska since their heavy weight makes them expensive to ship up to the state.

Asphalt would have cost less than a concrete slab but would need annual sealing. Concrete would last longer than asphalt, but cracking was a concern. Neither would have been especially visually appealing.

But those considerations were pushed to the side when the stormwater impact of an impervious surface became evident.  Runoff over a solid asphalt or concrete surface would tax the capacity of the next-door fuel depot's containment system and oil/water separator.

"The problem of grit, sand and debris carried along by stormwater was as much a concern as the amount and speed of runoff. The fuel depot advised that their system could get clogged up," said Fate.

Marcel LaPerriere, owner of Southeast Cedar Homes, is a local contractor in Sitka. He presented a solution to Raven Radio: VAST Composite Permeable Pavers.

VAST Composite Pavers Reduce the Carbon Footprint of Landscape and Permeable Pavers by 96 Percent Versus Concrete

VAST Pavers are made from Recycled Materials

Leaders in architecture and green building have challenged the manufacturers of building products to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from product manufacture and transportation. For 2030, the goal is a 50 percent reduction from the average embodied carbon footprint by product category. For at least one type of product, landscape and permeable pavers, there is no need to wait for 19 more Earth Days before such an ambitious goal is not just reached but surpassed.

Earth Day 2011, VAST® Enterprises, LLC announced that VAST® Composite Pavers have achieved a 96 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to concrete pavers. One square foot of concrete pavers embodies more than 40 pounds of CO2. The equivalent for VAST Composite Pavers is 1.5 pounds.

"Every 10,000 square feet of concrete pavers result in 412,264 pounds of CO2 emissions. With VAST Composite Pavers, it's only 15,432 pounds," said Andy Vander Woude, LEED AP, chief executive officer, VAST Enterprises, LLC. "The 396,832 pound reduction with VAST is equivalent to keeping 35 passenger cars off the road for a year."

Architecture 2030, a non-profit, non-partisan and independent organization, was established in 2002 in response to the climate change crisis. Its mission is to transform the building sector from a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions to a central part of the solution. The organization's 2030 Challenge for Products calls on the global architecture, planning, design, and building community to specify, design, and manufacture products to meet a carbon-equivalent footprint 35 percent below the product category average in 2015; 40 percent in 2020; 45 percent in 2025; and 50 percent by 2030.

Meet Andy Vander Woude

Co-Founder and CEO

 Andy Vander Woude

Background

I was born and raised in Sioux Falls, SD. After high school, I got a bachelors of science in electrical engineering from South Dakota State University. After college, I moved to Minneapolis and joined a great little company in Eden Prairie named Fargo Electronics. Fargo was a high-growth security products company benefiting from the worldwide need for security after 9/11. During its rise, I held several different positions in engineering, sales, product marketing and finally managing one of its two divisions. After its acquisition in 2006, I began working fulltime with our other three Founders (Steve Thorkelson, Troy Achterkirch, and Steve Smith) to launch VAST.

Hobbies

I'm a huge music fan and try to attend as many shows and festivals as possible. I'm also a wannabe music producer and DJ who plays whatever wine or dive bar will have me.

Favorite part about working at VAST

The people. VAST is comprised of the brightest, most talented and dedicated people I know. Oh, and the ability to wear shorts and flip-flops to work in the summer.

If you weren't in this career, what would you be doing?

I would probably be having a very unsuccessful music career.

What gets you excited about coming to work?

VAST is truly creating something new and having a positive world impact at the same time. It's not very often you get a chance to change the world.

What's an accessory (electronic or otherwise) you're never without?

iPhone. I also have a sickness for pens and watches.
