PolyWhey Floor finish is an evolved clear coating that uses recycled whey protein to make a durable and safe sealer and topcoat in one. Available in semi-gloss and satin finishes in quarts, gallons, and five gallon pails.

Use PolyWhey Floor on new bare wood flooring or previously stained or coated wood floors.

Where to Use It:

Turning a Waste into a Product

Whey, a by-product of cheese making, has a high BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) that can increase the burden on waste treatment facilities and can pollute rivers, lakes, and even the ocean. Over the last decade, this by-product has been used to create valuable products such as high-protein energy bars, infant formula, and as a film coating for food-safe packaging. By reformulating whey into a durable, natural wood finish, a potential waste product is taken out of the waste stream and put to a useful purpose.

Turning Away from Petroleum

The production of oil-based wood finishes and other coatings, such as paint, have relied solely on petroleum – a non-renewable resource. PolyWhey is derived from a renewable resource and in a small way helps to reduce dependence on oil, contributing to a more sustainable world.

Why PolyWhey®?

Why is PolyWhey better than other water-based finishes?

PolyWhey has greater durability with a cured hardness that is twice that of the average water-based finish. It also has 25% less VOC content than the standard that most water-based finishes try to meet. PolyWhey accomplishes this while using a natural, renewable resource as its bonding agent.

What makes PolyWhey a Green product?

Our formulations use whey protein as the bonding agent. Whey is a renewable resource and a natural by-product of the dairy industry. This use of a natural product in our professional finishes translates to low VOCs – and better indoor air quality.

What is whey?

Whey is a by-product of the dairy industry, specifically of cheese making.

What does VOC stand for?

VOCs, or Volatile Organic Compounds, evaporate into the air from many substances. These off-gasses contribute to smog production and health problems from inhalation. Petroleum products, like oil-based finishes, have harmful levels of these VOCs and are easily identifiable by their noxious smell.

What is the VOC level?

The VOC level for Vermont Natural Coatings' finishes is ≤180g/L (grams per liter). The toughest indoor air quality standard for wood finish in the United States is California's 275g/L.

Application

How fast does it dry?

Under normal conditions and with good ventilation, wood treated will be dry and ready for use in 2 to 3 hours. Allow 1 week for full product cure.

Does it yellow when exposed to UV light?

Our interior finishes will stay clear when exposed to interior UV light. PolyWhey Exterior has UV inhibitors to protect your decks, fences and siding from the sun's rays.

How do I prepare a surface for a VNC finish?

If applying to previously finished wood, sand in order to remove old finish before applying new finish. If sanding entire surface is not desired, be sure to sand areas of distress that can cause flaking in order to blend edges. Apply the product directly to the surface or the sealer coatings.

Is it possible to have a different level of gloss?

PolyWhey Furniture finish is available in gloss, semi-gloss and satin. PolyWhey Floor finish is available in semi-gloss and satin. Large volume customers should contact us to request a custom finish.
